PHC has a very experienced and supportive EAL (English as an Additional Language) department and a team of staff who support students with their English. We assess all students and then plan an individual programme of professional support and lessons for them. We offer bespoke programmes for all of our international students.
Students are taught in a professional caring environment. We know our students well and as a result we can teach to the strengths of the individual, whilst working to improve and support areas of requiring development. Moreover, the team works closely with the boarding house and teaching staff to ensure that each and every student is supported to the best of our ability so that they can reach their full potential.
We offer two additional lessons per week as part of our curriculum, which are included in the school fees.
In Years 7-9 lessons are provided in small groups in the place of a modern foreign language. In Years 10-11 students are prepared for the FCE or CAE qualification, depending on their English ability. These lessons are in the place of an option. In Years 12 and 13 we offer an IELTS programme as part of our Sixth Form options. Students have 2 lessons each week in preparation for their IELTS examination. This is the International English Language Testing System. Employers, immigration agencies and Educational Institutions require proof of a student’s level of English and therefore pupils are advised to sit the IELTS examination in preparation for university.
In addition to lessons in small groups students can also have lessons on a 2-1 or lessons on an individual basis. These are charged at an additional fee.
