What happens at a Model United Nations Weekend?
/ Categories: 30 January 2020General
Students from Princess Helena College have been participating in Model United Nation (MUN) events for a number of years now, on Friday 17 January a group of students attended a MUN weekend in High Wycombe.
MUN attendees take part in role-playing meetings like the Security Council and General Assembly, this gives participants a unique insight into how the United Nations Work. Participants will need to research and debate topical subjects to try and solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.
Here five students from PHC share their highlights…
Princess, Year 9
My favourite thing about this weekend was the actual conferences. Although I didn't speak this time round, seeing other people have the courage to stand and state their arguments was truly inspiring. It was really cool to see people my own age talking about world issues like climate change and the rise of populism and working together to find a solution.
I will definitely be taking the floor next time round!
Georgina, Year 9
I really enjoyed MUN because it was a great experience and a really fun way to make friends. The discussions that develop are incredibly interesting and sometimes controversial, as a representative of the Netherlands I was quite peaceful and neutral in the discussions with some countries such as Saudi Arabia taking a bold view on the topic of Women’s rights in armed conflict. Wycombe Abbey was especially fun as we had a diplomatic dinner and a Highland Ball which was a great chance to dress up and make friends. The weekend as a whole was very interesting and gave me a new outlook on current topics in the world.
Isabella, Year 10
My favourite things about the MUN weekend were the fiery debates that were really interesting, and my gain in self-confidence though standing up and speaking. I also really enjoyed the food.
Skye, Year 10
MUN was all around wonderful! Good debates, fun events, lovely food coupled with the opportunity to gain confidence and make new friends. For me, the highlight of MUN was definitely the last day of debate, lots of interesting and funny discussions!
Eleanor, Year 11
The trip to Wycombe Abbey MUN was an incredibly enjoyable trip. We were lucky to not have to travel to far to get there but we still stayed in a hotel which made the whole event much more fun as we were able to enjoy a diplomatic style dinner AND some Scottish dancing while we were there. The MUN sessions were demanding but very interesting as we discussed and debated topical issues and an exercise in which we had to deal with developing simulated situations. Altogether it was a very interesting and enjoyable weekend and we send our thanks to Ms Hutchinson for organising the trip.
