Triumph for PHC at Youth Speaks Competition
/ Categories: 14 January 2020General
On Monday 13 January, two teams from Princess Helena College entered the Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition at the Queen Mother Theatre, Hitchin. Competing with PHC were teams from The Priory School, Hitchin Boys and Fearne Hill. Each team comprised of a chairperson, a proposer and an opposer. The PHC intermediate team, Beau, Louisa and Isabella had chosen the motion ' Previous Generations are Responsible for Climate Change' and the senior team Sumira, Taryn and Michelle had chosen to debate the topic 'Social Media Negatively Impacts Student Academic Progress'.
The event was very formal and both teams had to meet strict criteria for the format of their presentations and the timing. Both teams rose to the challenge exceptionally well, putting forward strong and reasoned arguments, delivered eloquently, with excellent projection and engagement with the audience. The questions proved to be rather tricky, with Michelle particularly put on the hot spot, but she handled it very calmly and diplomatically.
All of the students learnt a great deal from the event including the importance of communication, research skills as well as gaining a great deal from observing how all the other teams had approached the task, their topics and their delivery; there were a number of potential future politicians amongst the competitors!
Overall, the event was highly enjoyable and a great success for all. The Year 9 girls did exceptionally well taking first place out of 4 teams and going on to the next stage of the tournament taking place in February. Watch this space!
