Our Move to Co-Education

Princess Helena College has a long and proud history as a School, which began in 1820. In 2018, PHC joined United Learning, becoming part of a national educational group that seeks to improve the life chances of all the children and young people which it serves. As part of this exciting new era, PHC will welcome boys as well as girls as we move to becoming a fully co-educational school.

The feedback we have received so far has been extremely positive, with many parents recognising the need for a small co-educational senior school in this area that offers an outstanding mainstream education to boys and girls through first class teaching and an ethos that puts individual support for each child at the heart of everything we do.

Welcoming Boys Into Years 7 & 12 from September 2019

For our current girls, moving from a single sex school to co-education could be challenging and we are determined to make the transition as seamless as possible for them. That is why, from September 2019, we will gradually become co-educational by accepting boys in Year 7 and Year 12. In this way, every current pupil will be able to continue their education until the Sixth Form in a single sex environment.

It is vitally important to us that we retain the traditional and special ethos of PHC, which is cherished by current pupils and their parents, and which we will maintain for future generations of girls and boys.

Investment in Technology & Facilities

Of equal importance is the requirement to meet fully the needs and interests of both boys and girls in curricular and co-curricular activities from September 2019. We are finalising the plans and investments to develop and enhance PHC’s facilities in time for next year, and updates will be posted regularly on this page. Our investment in technology includes moving to digital classrooms, with both teachers and students using iPads to enhance learning. Planning is also underway to ensure best use of existing buildings and to develop the site to meet the future needs of the school community. We are fortunate to have a large estate and these exciting plans include creation of new sports pitches. As part of this process, we will also be looking ahead to major infrastructure investment over the next few years.
